What Everyone Should Know About Weeds

Every yard is going to have weeds at one time or another!  There is just no way to avoid that fact!  No matter how good a lawncare expert is, he is still dealing with Mother Nature and her system is pretty good

Where do weeds seeds come from?  It is truly amazing how mobile weed seeds are...below are a couple of ways they “travel”:

Already in the soil                         From the neighbors yard
Bird “Poop”   Air-borne seeds
Tennis shoes   Lawnmowers
Pants cuffs       Pets
Drainage or rain water runoff    Other animals traffic (Raccoons, squirrels)

And there are many, many more...to many to list!!!

Let’s look at a couple of “WEED FACTS”...did you know that weed seeds can lay dormant in the soil for up to 10 years and when the conditions become favorable they can germinate...that’s right, sprout into new weeds after 10 years!  All they need is the right amount of sunlight and moisture.

Another weed fact...though we apply “pre-emergent herbicides” to halt the germination of weed seeds, unfortunately there are some weeds that are not effected by our pre-emergent and we must apply a “post-emergent” for these very difficult weeds...after they have germinated.  That means that whether we like it or not, special service visits may become necessary!

Interesting weed fact...”one of the best pre-emergent's” is a thick, green, healthy turf!  Why?  When your turf is very thick it will prevent sunlight from reaching the weed seeds in the soil and will in many cases prevent weed seed germination!

Very interesting happening...it’s Saturday afternoon and it is time to cut the grass but with the “happenings of the day”, I’m just too tired.  Then on Sunday, the family came over and there was just no time and on Monday, I had little league and it rained on Tuesday!  Now here it is 5 day later and the weeds seem to have grown “faster than my Bermuda”...well it sure is taller anyway!  When you cut it...what happens to the WEED SEEDS?  Now check this out...one seed head at the top of one weed stalk can produce literally “hundreds of seeds”...that’s right, just One Seed Head at the top of just One Stalk!  Multiply this times the number of those weeds you can see.  That’s why you need Jamison...Your lawn partner!  And...we are always as close as your phone!
